Supplying Chalk for the Historic Bulford Kiwi
MAC Group recently had the opportunity to play a small part in the ongoing care of one of Wiltshire’s more unusual landmarks — the Bulford Kiwi.
Carved into the chalk hillside above Bulford on Salisbury Plain, the giant Kiwi was created by New Zealand soldiers in 1919 while they were waiting to return home following the First World War. More than a century later, the landmark remains clearly visible and requires periodic maintenance to preserve its distinctive white appearance.

A slightly different delivery for MAC Group
MAC Group was asked to supply chalk for the latest maintenance work on the Kiwi.
Getting material onto a steep hillside is rather different from a conventional construction-site delivery. Once delivered to the site, the chalk was transported up the hillside by helicopter, providing some spectacular views as the material was lifted into position.
It certainly isn't something our drivers see on an everyday delivery.
Bulk material supply and haulage
While the destination was unusual, supplying and transporting bulk materials is very much part of MAC Group's everyday work.
MAC Group provides bulk haulage, muck away and aggregate services for projects across the UK. With a substantial fleet and operations based in the Midlands and Southampton, we support everything from individual material movements to large-scale and ongoing contracts nationwide.
Projects can range from straightforward aggregate deliveries and muck-away work to larger ongoing contracts — and occasionally something a little more unusual, such as helping to maintain a 100-year-old Kiwi carved into a Wiltshire hillside.
We're pleased to have played our part in helping preserve this unique landmark for the future.
